America and the Modern Middle East

It is often stated that 9/11 changed the world. Global History courses look at the histories of the regions and countries of the Middle East, and try to understand the evolution of ideas and politics that have created such a volatile climate. Teachers integrate 9/11 into courses on Modern European History by looking at other world changing events that have been called terrorism.
Other teachers explore the history of Afghanistan or Iran to unravel the relationship the U.S. had with those countries before and after September 11, 2001. In preparing lessons for students, one teacher realized he himself lacked background that would help him understand 9/11. He returned to school to do further academic study of the Middle East’s history, examining the context for the tensions flaring now.
