Tom Murphy, Elisabeth Irwin High School. A teacher developed a history elective course, The Global War on Terror, because his students wanted to know why we were attacked on 9/11. Despite having grown up in NYC after 9/11, they never received an adequate explanation of what happened. See the Lesson Plan.

Students Ask “Why did this happen?”
Lesson Plan Included
The teachers featured here believe that the events of 9/11 are so significant to the lives of their students that they must explain what happened that day and how our country has changed as a result of 9/11. They are integrating the study of 9/11 with other trends and themes in US History.
One teacher offers an annual course entitled “Global War on Terror.” Students are led to connect many topics from the facts of the day, to the killing of Osama bin Laden, to the current events in the Middle East. 9/11 taught people in the US that what is happening anywhere on the planet can demand attention of the US government’s security apparatus and can have profound impact on our lives.
